Three Films, Three Audiences, One Weekend: How Odyssey, Dhamaal and Jana Nayagan Are Sharing the Floor
A Hollywood IMAX epic, a Hindi comedy in its third week, and a Tamil superstar's farewell film are all drawing full houses at the same time, without visibly cutting into each other.

The 24-26 July weekend has three films running strong simultaneously, and the more interesting story is how little they appear to be competing for the same seats. The Odyssey is inside the biggest IMAX opening weekend in box office history worldwide at 52 million dollars, still holding premium screens eight days in. Dhamaal 4 has crossed 100 crore net in its third week. And Jana Nayagan, Thalapathy Vijay's farewell film, opened to housefull boards across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala and has passed 92 crore net inside its opening weekend.
Three different audiences, effectively: Odyssey pulling the premium-format, English-language crowd; Dhamaal holding its family and repeat-viewing base; Jana Nayagan commanding the South on the strength of a career-ending farewell with real emotional weight behind it. When films this size overlap, the usual story is one eating into another's business. This weekend, the story is that the market had room for all three.
It sets up an interesting next fortnight. Spider-Man: Brand New Day lists 31 July, and 14 August brings the Independence Day cluster: Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 on the same date, Maatrubhumi's status still uncertain. Whether the floor can keep absorbing releases at this pace, or whether something finally has to give, is the question worth watching from here.
