Thalapathy Vijay's Final Film Opens to 41 Crore, Closing a 34-Year Career

Jana Nayagan opened to 41 crore net on its first day, the biggest Tamil opener of 2026, and closes a chapter Tamil cinema has been watching for years: it is Thalapathy Vijay's 69th and final film. He was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 10 May 2026, two and a half months before this release, after his party's win in the state assembly elections.

The film itself carries that transition inside its plot. Directed by H. Vinoth, it follows a former police officer turned political figure, played by Vijay, with Bobby Deol as the corrupt antagonist he comes into conflict with. Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Prakash Raj round out the cast, and Anirudh Ravichander, scoring his fifth film with Vijay, composed the soundtrack. Trade reports have put the budget anywhere between 300 and 500 crore depending on the source, a spread wide enough that the true number is genuinely unclear.

The road here was not smooth. Originally positioned for a Pongal release on 9 January, the film ran into a prolonged fight with the Central Board of Film Certification and multiple rounds of script changes before finally clearing with an A certificate, pushing the release more than six months. It also leaked online during the delay, with industry monitors estimating over 1.2 crore views before the official release, and the director issued a public denial this week of rumours that scenes were shot during an actual campaign event.

None of that dented opening day demand: over four lakh advance tickets sold, a 2,500-theatre release, and southern states alone accounting for the large majority of pre-release bookings. Whatever the film's merits, the moment itself is real. A 34-year acting career, the second-longest continuous run of box office dominance in Tamil film history behind only a handful of names, ends on this one number.
