Awarapan 2 has settled in as a Super Hit at the Indian box office, with its India net collection at 149.70 crore as of its third weekend, a figure trade trackers expect to cross 150 crore before the run winds down entirely. For Emraan Hashmi, it is the biggest solo hit of his career, ending a stretch of underperforming releases and answering a question the industry had been asking for years: whether his brand of intense, music-driven romantic drama could still draw an audience on its own.

The film is a sequel to the 2007 original, which was a commercial disaster on release but slowly built a cult following over the following decade through television reruns and its soundtrack. That slow-burn reputation appears to have translated directly into opening-weekend business this time around: Awarapan 2 registered the biggest solo opening of Hashmi's career, crossed 100 crore worldwide within three days, and passed 100 crore in India within five, according to Sacnilk.

Directed by Nitin Kakkar rather than Mohit Suri, who helmed the original and was not approached for the sequel, the film brings Hashmi back as Shivam Pandit opposite Disha Patani, with Shabana Azmi in a central antagonist role. Collections have cooled steadily since the opening weekend, as is typical once a film moves past its first two weeks, but the decline has been gradual rather than the kind of steep single-day collapse that has affected several other recent releases.

The film opened on Independence Day weekend against Sunny Deol's Batwara 1947 and has since shared screens with a run of other major releases, including Toxic, Hanuman Ansh and, most recently, Mirzapur: The Movie. That it has continued adding to its total through all of that competition, rather than being squeezed out early, is itself part of the story: a nearly two-decade-old cult favourite finding a theatrical audience that several bigger-budget new releases this year have struggled to hold onto.
