Alia Bhatt has officially confirmed she is joining Tumbbad 2, the sequel to Sohum Shah's 2018 cult horror film. She has said the original stayed with her since she first watched it, and that what excites her about the sequel is the chance to work inside a mythology this specific and this fully realised.
It is a genuinely unexpected pairing: Bhatt has never worked in pure horror, and Tumbbad's register, folk myth, rain-soaked dread, a monster built from Marathi oral tradition, is about as far from her usual mainstream roles as a Hindi film gets. That is likely the appeal on both sides. A sequel to a film that built its reputation on scarcity and word of mouth gets real commercial insurance from a star of her scale, without needing to compromise the tone that made the original work.
