Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan Reunite On Screen After Eighteen Years for Priyadarshan's Haiwaan
The teaser for Haiwaan dropped this week, and it's a deliberately unsettling one - a mystery thriller from a director best known for making the pair laugh, not unsettle.
Bolly BuzzsIt's been eighteen years since Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan last shared a screen, and the reunion arriving with Haiwaan is a genuine tonal swerve. Priyadarshan built his reputation, and much of his history with both actors, on ensemble comedy. The teaser trades all of that in for something mysterious and unsettling, with the two stars promising a film closer to a slow-burn thriller than the broad comic timing audiences associate with either of them together.
The film also brings in Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar in supporting roles, under the KVN Productions and Thespian Films banner. A worldwide theatrical release is set for September 11, giving the reunion a fairly tight runway to build anticipation.
For two actors whose combined filmography together leans almost entirely comic, the bigger story here may end up being the genre pivot itself. Whether audiences show up for Kumar and Khan doing something genuinely different, rather than more of what made their earlier pairings work, is the real question Haiwaan is setting up to answer.
