Christopher Nolan Credits RRR With Opening the US Market to Indian Cinema

Promoting The Odyssey in India, Nolan called Rajamouli's film proof that Indian cinema has the scale to break old distribution silos.

Christopher Nolan praised S. S. Rajamouli's RRR during his India visit for The Odyssey, calling it proof that Indian films have the scale, emotion and storytelling power to cross language and cultural barriers. He said the old distribution model kept national film industries in separate silos, and that RRR's theatrical success in the United States is breaking that structure down.

According to Nolan, once a film breaks into a market as large as the US, it creates an opening for filmmakers from other countries to reach global audiences on the back of it, an argument that places RRR's box office run alongside its Oscar win for Naatu Naatu as the twin proof points of its international impact.

The remarks carry particular weight coming from a director whose own film is simultaneously testing the reverse route: whether a Hollywood tentpole can command India's premium screens the way Indian epics are now commanding America's. The Odyssey has crossed 100 crore gross in India in six days, largely on the strength of its English-language version.

It is also the second time this year that a major Hollywood filmmaker has publicly credited Rajamouli's work with reshaping how the industry views cross-border cinema, a recognition Indian trade circles have wanted for years and are now getting from directors with no commercial reason to offer it.
