Sunny Deol plays Hanuman in Ramayana and leads Batwara 1947 into the Independence Day corridor on 13 August. Two of the biggest patriotic and mythological swings of the year belong to an actor whose career was written off more than once in the last decade.

Gadar 2 changed that arithmetic overnight in 2023, proving that the audience which grew up on him had not gone anywhere, it had simply been ignored by an industry chasing a younger metro demographic.

Hanuman is the more interesting casting of the two. It asks for devotion and physical scale at once, and it places him in the part of the film most likely to draw the loudest audience reaction in a packed single screen. If Ramayana works, that is the moment people will talk about.
