Audiences Are Calling Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2 Comeback 'A Perfect Blend of Emotion and Intensity'

The verdict from opening-day theatres was louder than any review: Shivam Pandit is back, and the crowd that grew up on the original showed up to prove it.

Critics have been lukewarm on Awarapan 2's script, but the reaction from actual opening-day theatres has run considerably warmer. Social media through Friday was thick with viewers describing Hashmi's return as Shivam Pandit as the film's real event, several calling it the performance of his career and a handful of shows reportedly went houseful on word of mouth alone before the day was out.

It's the specific kind of response that doesn't always show up in a star rating: less about whether the plot broke new ground, more about an audience getting the exact character they'd waited nineteen years to see again. For a franchise built on a film that barely registered on release in 2007 and only found its real audience years later on television, that kind of immediate, vocal turnout says something the box office numbers can't fully capture on their own.

Whether that goodwill converts into the same long tail that turned the original into a cult favourite remains to be seen. But on day one, at least, the film did the one thing it needed to: it made the wait feel worth it to the people who'd been waiting.
