Review: Spider-Man: Brand New Day — ★★★★☆
★★★★ · The biggest opening a foreign film has ever had in India, and an audience that turned up before anyone told them to.

Sixty point six crore net on a single day, from 17,250 shows, on a 72.44 crore India gross. No non-Indian film has opened at this level here before, and the margin over the previous benchmark is not narrow. More than two million tickets had sold on BookMyShow before the first show ran.
The occupancy pattern is worth reading closely, because it is unusually healthy: 56.58 percent across English shows overall, above 65 percent at night, and above 51 percent even in morning slots. Front-loaded openings usually show a collapse outside prime time. This one did not, which is generally the difference between a big weekend and a long run.
Four stars, with the caveat that a rating on day two is a provisional thing. The verdict we are confident about is commercial: this is the strongest opening position any Hollywood release has ever held in this market, and every holdover on the board lost screens to it overnight. Whether the film sustains it is next week's story.
