Three films from three different industries, all past 130 crore in the same month, is not a common shape for the Indian box office.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now landed on top of all of them with 60.60 crore on a single day and 17,250 shows, a screen count no other title on the board can compete with. The effect was immediate rather than gradual: The Odyssey dropped to 953 shows, Dhamaal 4 to 2,563, and Jana Nayagan to 5,496, all within twenty-four hours.

What that means for the coming fortnight is that the holdovers are effectively finished as theatrical propositions, whatever their remaining audience demand. The interesting question is no longer how far Dhamaal 4 or The Odyssey can go, but whether Jana Nayagan's second weekend can hold enough of its core Tamil audience to justify the screens it still has.
